The municipality of Angra do Heroísmo is welcoming the official celebrations of Portugal Day, Camões Day, and Portuguese Communities Day, which are taking place on Terceira Island through June 10. This year’s commemorations carry particular significance as they bring together national, regional, military, religious, and civic leaders in one of Portugal’s most historic cities.
The ceremonies will be presided over by Portuguese President António José Seguro and will include the participation of the President of the Assembly of the Republic, the President of the Azorean Legislative Assembly, the President of the Azorean Government, and other prominent national and regional figures.
According to the Municipality of Angra do Heroísmo, the celebrations represent an important moment of national reflection and unity, reaffirming the Azores’ connection to Portugal while highlighting shared values of identity, freedom, history, and citizenship.
The program includes official military ceremonies, the raising and lowering of the Portuguese flag, cultural performances, concerts, fireworks, and a wide range of activities organized by the Portuguese Armed Forces designed to engage residents and visitors alike.
The festivities began in Praia da Vitória with a diverse program showcasing the capabilities and community engagement efforts of the Armed Forces. Through June 10, the public will have the opportunity to attend demonstrations of explosive ordnance disposal, military working dog exhibitions, airsoft and rope courses, Polaris vehicle experiences, boat rides, and visits to naval assets.
Technology and public health are also featured, with drone demonstrations and health screenings for diabetes and hypertension available to the public.
The cultural component of the celebrations opened with a joint performance by the Portuguese Air Force Band and the Pactis Choir, highlighting the close relationship between military tradition and artistic expression.
Today’s program focuses on music, featuring a concert by the Air Force Band alongside singers Sónia Pereira and João Barros in Angra do Heroísmo’s Praça Velha.
The official celebrations intensify on June 9 with the ceremonial raising of the Portuguese flag at the Customs Courtyard (Pátio da Alfândega). Later that evening, Praça Velha will host performances of traditional improvisational singing, known as cantigas ao desafio, along with appearances by the Amit Choir and Myrica Faya. The day concludes with a fireworks display over Angra Bay.
On June 10, the official Portugal Day ceremonies reach their peak with a military ceremony at Cerrado do Bailão, followed by the lowering of the national flag at the Customs Courtyard.
The celebrations underscore Angra do Heroísmo’s historic role within the Portuguese nation and its enduring connection to the broader Portuguese-speaking world.
As part of the Portugal Day commemorations, President António José Seguro also recently visited Luxembourg, where he met with prominent Portuguese and Portuguese-descendant business leaders, highlighting the importance of Portuguese communities abroad and their contribution to Portugal’s economic and cultural presence around the world.
For the Azores, hosting the national celebrations offers an opportunity to showcase both regional identity and national unity, reaffirming the archipelago’s place within the Portuguese story while honoring the global communities that continue to carry Portuguese culture far beyond the Atlantic.
