The Municipality of Velas continues to strengthen its position as one of the Azores’ distinctive tourism destinations, promoting the municipality’s unique identity through its registered brand, “Velas, Capital of Cheese”, a designation that celebrates a product with more than five centuries of history and a reputation for exceptional quality.
The initiative forms part of a broader strategy aimed at showcasing Velas and the island of São Jorge as destinations where authenticity, tradition, natural beauty, and sustainability combine to create a unique visitor experience.
Municipal officials have continued to invest in promoting the destination across different markets, highlighting the qualities that increasingly attract travelers seeking meaningful experiences, unspoiled landscapes, cultural heritage, and a slower, more authentic way of life.
As part of this ongoing effort, the Municipality recently returned to the city of Ponta Delgada on the island of São Miguel to promote tourism within the Azores themselves. The promotional campaign coincided with the Festas do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres, one of the largest and most significant religious celebrations in the archipelago, drawing thousands of participants and visitors from across the islands and beyond.
By taking advantage of the visibility and public attendance generated by the festivities, municipal representatives were able to present the attractions of Velas and São Jorge to a broad audience, encouraging inter-island travel and raising awareness of the destination’s cultural, gastronomic, and natural offerings.
Central to this promotion is São Jorge’s internationally recognized cheese, one of the most iconic products of the Azores. Produced for generations and deeply connected to the island’s agricultural traditions, São Jorge cheese serves not only as a gastronomic symbol but also as a gateway to understanding the island’s history, landscape, and rural culture.
According to the municipal executive, the continued investment in destination promotion is designed to strengthen tourism’s contribution to the local economy while reinforcing a development model based on sustainability and the responsible use of local resources.
The municipality believes that Velas is increasingly appealing to travelers who value genuine cultural encounters, outdoor experiences, environmental quality, and personal well-being. As tourism trends continue to favor smaller and more authentic destinations, São Jorge is positioning itself as a place where visitors can experience the Azores beyond the traditional tourism routes.
Through initiatives such as the “Velas, Capital of Cheese” campaign and targeted promotion at major regional events, the municipality continues to build a tourism identity rooted in heritage, quality, and sustainability, ensuring that the island’s distinctive character remains at the center of its development strategy.
For Velas, tourism is not simply about attracting visitors—it is about sharing a way of life shaped by centuries of tradition, remarkable landscapes, and a community proud of its cultural and gastronomic heritage.
