A total of 1,595 students from Madeira secured a place in higher education during the first round of Portugal’s National Higher Education Admissions Competition, representing an increase of 25.6% compared with last year.

The figures were provided to DIÁRIO by Ricardo Gonçalves, director of Madeira’s Higher Education Office, who highlighted both the growing demand for higher education and the continuing trend of Madeiran students pursuing their studies outside the Autonomous Region.

A total of 1,768 students from Madeira applied during the first round. Of the 1,595 who were admitted, 564 secured places at the University of Madeira, while 1,031 were accepted by higher education institutions elsewhere in Portugal.

According to Gonçalves, the results “confirm both the growing demand for higher education and the continuation of academic mobility outside the Region as a structural reality.”

Indeed, the figures demonstrate the considerable importance of student mobility in Madeira: nearly two-thirds of those admitted will pursue their studies outside the archipelago, while slightly more than one-third will remain at the University of Madeira.

It is still too early, however, to determine how many students were admitted to their first-choice course or institution.

“We need a little more time to carry out that assessment,” Gonçalves explained, adding that the Higher Education Office expects to have more detailed information available during the coming week.

The first-round results therefore reveal not only a significant increase in the number of Madeiran students entering higher education, but also the continuing importance of mobility between the islands and mainland Portugal in the academic paths of Madeira’s younger generations.
