Filipe Ramalheira, Consul General of Portugal in San Francisco, has been honored as an Alumni Ambassador of the University of Coimbra, receiving the distinction alongside Member of the European Parliament and former Portuguese Minister of Health Marta Temido.
The recognition was presented during the University of Coimbra’s welcoming session for international mobility students, lending the occasion particular symbolic significance. At the beginning of this academic year, the University welcomed 1,470 international students—an increase of 9 percent over the previous year and a new institutional record. These figures confirm Coimbra’s growing international reach and its enduring ability to build bridges among nations, cultures, and traditions of knowledge.

Upon receiving the distinction, Consul General Ramalheira reflected on the profound academic and personal bond he maintains with his alma mater, expressing both his pride in returning to the University and the renewed sense of responsibility accompanying this appointment.
He also praised the exceptional work of Professor João Nuno Calvão da Silva, Vice-Rector for External Relations and Alumni, and his entire team in strengthening the University’s international presence.
Through his diplomatic responsibilities, Consul General Ramalheira regularly encounters University of Coimbra alumni throughout the world and witnesses the distinction with which they apply their education. In his words, these former students are “the finest ambassadors the University of Coimbra could have.”
His appointment as an Alumni Ambassador recognizes not only his distinguished academic and diplomatic career but also his ability to represent internationally the humanistic, scholarly, and cultural values of one of Europe’s oldest and most prestigious universities.
The Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute at California State University, Fresno—PBBI–Fresno State—warmly congratulates Consul General Filipe Ramalheira on this well-deserved recognition. Throughout his diplomatic mission, he has been an attentive and dedicated partner, deeply committed to Portugal, its communities abroad, and the strengthening of academic, cultural, and institutional relations between Portugal and the United States.
This honor from the University of Coimbra recognizes a life of public service marked by competence, accessibility, and a profound understanding that representing Portugal in the world also means preserving its memory, dignifying its culture, and building new bridges toward the future.
