The inaugural gathering on Terceira Island brings together technology companies, entrepreneurs, and innovation leaders, strengthening partnerships and presenting a shared vision for the future of the Azorean business ecosystem.

In the middle of the Atlantic, where geography has traditionally been regarded as a challenge to economic development, a new generation of entrepreneurs is discovering that distance need not mean isolation. Technology, innovation, and the exchange of knowledge are opening possibilities that transcend the physical boundaries of island life. It is within this emerging landscape that the first Azores Tech Summit took place on Terceira Island, bringing together businesses, specialists, and institutions determined to strengthen the archipelago’s position in an increasingly interconnected technological world.

Held October 22–23 at the Terceira Island Science and Technology Park (TERINOV), in Angra do Heroísmo, the inaugural Azores Tech Summit concluded with what organizers described as a highly positive overall assessment, particularly regarding the creation of partnerships and new opportunities for collaboration among incubated companies and other participating organizations.

Under the theme “Empowering Technology-Based SMEs in the Atlantic Innovation Ecosystem,” the two-day event offered thematic discussions, practical workshops, technological demonstrations, bilateral meetings, and networking opportunities designed to encourage knowledge-sharing and identify common business interests.

According to the organizers, the presentations by participating specialists and the workshops dedicated to artificial intelligence received particularly favorable evaluations.

Participants also expressed their intention to incorporate the tools and methodologies presented during the summit into their businesses, suggesting that the event’s impact may extend beyond the discussions themselves into practical applications within the regional economy.

One of the summit’s significant moments was the presentation of the Incubar Açores 2030 Manifesto to the Regional Government of the Azores through Ilhas de Valor.

Developed over recent months, the document brings together a shared vision for strengthening and expanding the regional business incubation ecosystem. Its objectives include encouraging greater cooperation among incubators, supporting the development of emerging businesses, and creating a more dynamic environment for innovation and entrepreneurship throughout the archipelago.

The manifesto reflects collaborative work promoted through the Regional Network of Business Incubators of the Azores and represents an effort to establish common priorities for the coming years.

For an island region composed of nine geographically dispersed territories, cooperation among business incubators and technology-based companies can be especially important. The exchange of expertise, resources, and opportunities may help smaller enterprises overcome some of the limitations associated with distance and market size.

The summit also highlighted the growing relevance of artificial intelligence and digital technologies to the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises, particularly those seeking to develop new products, improve business processes, or expand beyond regional markets.

The event was organized by the Angra do Heroísmo Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Regional Government of the Azores through Ilhas de Valor, the Regional Network of Business Incubators of the Azores, and TERINOV.

It received support from the i3URBAN project under the INTERREG MAC 2021–2027 program, which promotes cooperation involving the European Union’s Macaronesian regions.

Beyond the positive assessments of its inaugural edition, the summit illustrates a broader ambition: to develop an innovation ecosystem in which Azorean companies can build partnerships, share knowledge, and pursue opportunities across the Atlantic and beyond.

The long-term value of such initiatives will ultimately depend on whether the connections established during the event produce lasting collaborations, stronger businesses, and new opportunities for the region’s entrepreneurs.

For the Azores, whose history has been shaped by generations crossing oceans in search of opportunity, the emerging technological economy offers another way of connecting the islands to the wider world.

The Atlantic remains the same immense ocean. What is changing is the possibility that, through innovation and collaboration, its distance may become less of a barrier and more of a bridge.
