Due to the resignation of Prime Minister António Costa, the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, sets national elections for March 10, 2024.
The president of the Republic announced the dissolution of Parliament and the scheduling of elections for March 10, two days ago, after meeting with all political leaders and his national advisory board. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s decision to dissolve the Assembly of the Republic and call for elections was the hypothesis that generated the most favorable positions in his meetings with the parties. Still, the same did not happen among his advisors of State, who were equally divided, as the President revealed in his communication to the country.
António Costa will remain in office until the legislative elections, and his resignation will be formalized in December so that the 2024 State Budget can be approved.
