This Tuesday, the Vice-Presidency of the Regional Government of the Azores signed the contract for the “Repair of the flaps in the departures area of the roof of the passenger terminal at Lajes Civil Aerogare” with the company Estraga Ferro—Serralharia Unipessoal, Lda. The contract price is €149,620.00, plus VAT at the legal rate in force, and the execution period is seven months.

The Vice-President of the Government, Artur Lima, believes that “this work is of particular importance, since it is essential to upgrade and dignify Lajes Airport, which is the infrastructure that has the greatest impact on the mobility of the people of Terceira and those who visit” the island.

“This will be an in-depth intervention on the flaps in the departures area, with the aim of replacing and upgrading the materials that are in a high state of corrosion, while at the same time implementing new nets that prevent birds from landing and nesting,” said the vice-president.

The work marks the start of the first phase of a series of planned interventions that will allow the airport’s passenger terminal to be upgraded. The intervention comes when Lajes Airport has seen an increase in the number of passengers disembarking.

In 2023, almost one million passengers disembarked on Terceira Island, and this year, there has been a gradual increase, with a 17.8% increase in November compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Regional Statistics Service.

In 2025, Terceira will receive new air routes originating in Zurich and San Francisco. These routes will allow Terceira to attract new tourist flows and strengthen connections with the Lusodescendant communities in the United States.

Last October also saw the completion of the acquisition of an Automatic Weather Station, for a contract value of 850,000 euros. This station is currently being tested and will bring Lajes Airport up to the level of the main international airports in terms of the use of this type of technology.
