The João Paulo II Airport is set to significantly strengthen the Azores’ international connectivity in 2026, as three new airlines prepare to launch operations to and from São Miguel Island, marking another milestone in the archipelago’s growing role as a transatlantic gateway.

According to information released by ANA Aeroportos de Portugal and VINCI Airports, both Air Canada and WestJet will begin operating routes between Toronto and Ponta Delgada, joining Azores Airlines and substantially increasing travel options between the Azores and Canada — home to one of the world’s largest Azorean diaspora communities.

Meanwhile, Austrian Airlines will inaugurate direct service to Vienna, becoming the fourth airline within the Lufthansa Group to operate in Ponta Delgada alongside Lufthansa, Edelweiss Air, and Eurowings. The addition further positions the Azores as an increasingly strategic Atlantic hub linking Europe and North America.

ANA/VINCI Airports says it remains “fully committed to expanding Azorean connectivity” and has strengthened its incentive program designed to attract new airlines and routes. Under the revised framework, carriers may now receive up to 100 percent support during their second year of operation — double the level previously available.

The company also noted that airport fees across the Azores will remain unchanged in 2026 for the second consecutive year. Officials emphasized that the region continues to maintain some of the lowest airport charges within the Portuguese airport network, representing a real-term reduction since the beginning of the concession in 2013.

ANA/VINCI teams say they remain in close dialogue with airline operators and tourism entities to continue investing in new routes and broader international accessibility for the Azores.

Passenger traffic figures underscore that momentum. In 2025, João Paulo II Airport handled approximately 2.8 million passengers, a 2 percent increase over 2024, representing an additional 52,000 travelers. Across the four Azorean airports managed by ANA — Ponta Delgada, Horta, Santa Maria, and Flores — total passenger traffic reached 3.4 million, also up 2 percent year-over-year.

Airport officials also highlighted a gradual reduction in tourism seasonality, with airline operations increasingly extending beyond the traditional summer peak — a long-standing strategic objective for the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

Infrastructure investments continue to reshape the passenger experience. The first phase of renovations at the Ponta Delgada and Horta terminals began in 2024 and concluded in 2025, representing an investment of nearly €30 million. Improvements focused on passenger comfort and operational efficiency, including upgraded public areas, terminal façades, security and border control zones, boarding gates, technological systems, restrooms, thermal infrastructure, and sustainability measures.

In 2026, the João Paulo II Airport VIP Lounge will be relocated in preparation for the next major expansion project: a 30 percent increase in terminal capacity, adding roughly 4,400 square meters and two new floors to the facility.

The long-term master plan for the airport also outlines additional medium- and long-term investments aligned with projected air traffic growth and ambitious sustainability goals for the region — signaling that the Azores are no longer merely a remote Atlantic destination, but an increasingly connected crossroads between continents.
