The Vila das Lajes celebrated its 24th anniversary on June 14, an occasion marked by reflections on the community’s historical significance, strategic role in the Atlantic, and future development prospects.
Speaking during the commemorative ceremony, Praia da Vitória Mayor Vânia Ferreira emphasized the importance of Lajes as a territory of both cultural and geopolitical relevance, underscoring its unique position within the Azores and its contribution to Portugal’s Atlantic projection.
“Lajes is a place of great cultural and strategic importance that, throughout its history, has affirmed itself as a space of hospitality, progress, and connection to the world, while never losing the values that define its identity,” said Ferreira. “It occupies a singular position within the geostrategic context of the Azores and in Portugal’s Atlantic presence.”
The mayor noted that the community’s history has long been shaped by its relationship with the wider Atlantic world, making it one of the most internationally connected localities in the archipelago while maintaining strong ties to its local traditions and heritage.
A significant portion of Ferreira’s address focused on economic development initiatives currently underway in the municipality, particularly the creation of the new Business Park in Lajes. The project, representing an investment of approximately two million euros, is designed to strengthen local economic activity, attract new investment, support existing businesses, and encourage entrepreneurship.
According to the mayor, the new business infrastructure reflects a commitment to creating conditions that will foster sustainable economic growth and generate new opportunities for residents.
“We intend to provide modern, functional infrastructure capable of meeting the current demands of productive sectors,” Ferreira explained. “The new Business Park is designed to create qualified employment opportunities and strengthen the competitiveness of the territory.”
The project is viewed as a strategic investment aimed at diversifying the local economy while reinforcing Lajes’ attractiveness as a place to live, work, and invest.
The mayor also highlighted improvements planned for local infrastructure, including the rehabilitation of Rua do Lajedo. The project, budgeted at approximately 400,000 euros, is expected to improve accessibility and contribute to a higher quality of life for residents.
As she concluded her remarks, Ferreira reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment to working closely with the Parish Council, local institutions, businesses, and residents to support the continued development of the community.
The anniversary celebration served not only as a moment to honor the history of Vila das Lajes but also as an opportunity to reflect on its future. Positioned at the crossroads of local identity and global relevance, Lajes continues to build upon its unique legacy as one of the Azores’ most strategically significant communities while investing in projects aimed at ensuring long-term prosperity and resilience.
Twenty-four years after achieving village status, Lajes remains a community deeply rooted in its traditions while looking confidently toward the opportunities and challenges of the future.
