As the United States continues its commemoration of the 250th anniversary of American independence, a special event in New Bedford will celebrate one of the oldest and most enduring international friendships in the world—the relationship between Portugal and the United States.

On July 19, the Bronspiegel Auditorium will host Atlantic Celebration Day, a gathering dedicated to the historic bonds that unite the two nations and to the Portuguese-American community whose generations of contributions have helped strengthen those ties across the Atlantic.

The event, organized with the support of the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD), seeks to highlight the shared history, democratic values, cultural connections, and human stories that have linked Portugal and the United States for centuries.

For Portuguese-Americans, particularly in southeastern New England, the celebration carries special significance. Communities such as New Bedford, Fall River, and surrounding cities have long served as gateways between Portugal and America, preserving language, traditions, and cultural heritage while contributing to the social, economic, and civic life of the United States.

The festivities will begin at 2:00 p.m. with a program designed to bring together people of all ages. Attendees will have the opportunity to watch a live screening of the FIFA World Cup Final, gather with family and friends, and enjoy Portuguese food and beverages in a festive atmosphere that reflects the warmth and hospitality so characteristic of Portuguese culture.

The highlight of the day will be a special concert by António Zambujo, one of Portugal’s most celebrated contemporary artists. Known for his distinctive voice and his ability to blend traditional Portuguese musical influences with modern sensibilities, Zambujo has earned international recognition for performances that move effortlessly between fado, cante alentejano, folk traditions, and contemporary songwriting.

His appearance in New Bedford offers Portuguese-Americans a rare opportunity to experience one of Portugal’s leading musical voices while celebrating the cultural heritage that continues to connect communities on both sides of the Atlantic.

Beyond the music and festivities, Atlantic Celebration Day serves as a reminder that the Portugal–United States relationship has always been built not only through diplomacy and politics, but through people. From the earliest maritime connections to successive generations of immigrants who crossed the Atlantic in search of opportunity, the friendship between the two nations has been shaped by countless personal stories of migration, family, work, service, and community building.

As America reflects on its first 250 years, the celebration also recognizes the contributions of Portuguese-Americans to the nation’s history and future. It is a tribute to a community that has helped build bridges between cultures while remaining deeply connected to its roots.

Whether attending to enjoy the World Cup Final, hear António Zambujo perform, reconnect with Portuguese traditions, or simply experience a vibrant cultural gathering, participants will be joining a celebration of friendship, heritage, and the enduring Atlantic ties that continue to unite Portugal and the United States.

Admission to Atlantic Celebration Day is free, although registration is required due to limited seating availability.
